Keep Our Kids Rooted in Their Communities.

An elementary school in each RSU 5 town — Durham, Freeport, and Pownal — improves student outcomes and enhances community.

Rooted in Community Schools formed after the February 2026 proposal to repurpose Pownal Elementary School. We stand united against any plans to close or repurpose PES.

Why We Oppose Repurposing

We believe the proposal to repurpose PES as an early childhood education center raises serious concerns for students, families, and taxpayers across RSU 5.

Burdens Our Youngest Learners:

  • Adds significant daily bus time for 3- and 4-year-olds—including those with special needs—only to have them switch schools again a year later.

The Savings are Uncertain:

  • The projected 1% budget savings could easily be erased by rising transportation, staffing, and transition costs.

PES Enrollment Continues to Grow:

  • PES enrollment has grown steadily each year for the last 4 years, with upcoming classes near capacity. Decisions should be based on future growth, not limited to narrow "cost-per-student" data.

Weakens the Community:

  • RSU 5 is strongest when every town has a neighborhood school to foster family involvement and student belonging.

The heart of our community belongs in our neighborhood schools.

Every town deserves its elementary school. Maintaining local schools improves student outcomes, safeguards property values, and keeps our community whole.
